The Institute For Transfusion Medicine Clinical Services, ITxMCS, Cord Blood Services is the not-for-profit umbilical cord blood donor bank serving Chicago area hospitals. It is the only bank of this kind in Illinois, and is located in Glenview, IL. The ITxM Cord Blood Bank accepts altruistic donations of cord blood after the birth of healthy babies. In accordance with the Umbilical Cord Blood Donation Act (Public Act 93-0143 enacted 1/04 in Illinois), there is no charge to the donor from the Bank, Hospital or Physician, nor is there payment. These donations are registered with the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) to be made available to patients already in need of blood forming cells. Most of the cord blood transplants that have been performed have been for children with leukemia, but children and adults are currently being transplanted for a variety of cancers, immune disorders, blood diseases, metabolic diseases and leukodystrophies. ITxM Cord Blood Services is affiliated with the network of banks within the Center for Cord Blood at the National Marrow Donor Program. The NMDP helps patients who need a life-saving marrow or cord blood transplant by connecting the patients, doctors, donors and researchers to the resources they need to help more people live longer, healthier lives. 2012 ITxM Year In Review |
